Maiko Kobayashi

Born in 1977 in Yokohama-City, Japan, and based in Tokyo, creates paintings of child-like beings that embody deep emotional states, juxtaposed with their whimsical appearances. Her technique involves layering gesso and acrylic on Japanese Washi paper or canvas, with charcoal-drawn figures that undergo repeated revisions, set against a block color background. Her choice of color resonates with the aesthetic traditions of Japanese painting and illustration. She has held solo exhibitions at Shun Art Gallery, Shanghai; Gallery WADA, Tokyo; Galerie OMOTESANDO, Tokyo, among other institutions.
