Miriam Cabessa

Miriam Cabessa (b. 1966, Casablanca) is an Israeli-American painter and installation artist, and the recipient of the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Israeli Ministry of Culture. Cabessa’s practice is grounded in painting as a physical and durational act. Working exclusively with oil paint, she uses her body and simple domestic tools in place of the brush, allowing movement, repetition, and breath to generate the image. The surface becomes a site of accumulation, where traces of action are held in a state of tension between presence and disappearance. Since representing Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1997, Cabessa has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions internationally. Her work is held in major public and private collections, including the British Museum, London; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; Fondazione Imago Mundi, Treviso; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, Los Angeles.
