b. 1980, Durban, South Africa. Sphephelo Mnguni is a Durban-based artist whose practice seeks to document black culture in all its permutations. Currently focused on painting, Mnguni creates portraits of black subjects which boldly address the viewer and call for recognition beyond cultural stereotypes. His work is inspired by inequalities observed and experienced in his daily life, and by discourses of blackness in South Africa and in the African diaspora. (Courtesy of KZNSA Gallery, Durban).
