Jonathan Edelhuber

The Jonathan Edelhuber’s solo exhibition at Nassima Landau explores the mortality of humankind. Skulls are a recurring motif in Edelhuber’s oeuvre, a symbol that has been used repetitively in art history, most notably in relation to the concept of “vanitas” or “memento mori” – both representing the fragility of life and the certainty of death. In repose from this art-historical symbolism, Edelhuber’s circular, repetitive, and bright-colored brushstrokes create a dizzying effect that is both meditative and comical. This series of paintings and sculptures, which often include homages to well-known artists such as Picasso, neutralizes the macabre symbolism of the subject matter, creating a satirical and rebellious exploration of the concept of “vanitas”.
